The Perry 200 Grand Parade will be held in downtown Erie on May 25, starting at 1 p.m. The 1.8-mile route will start at West 12th and Cherry streets, travel east on West 12th Street to State Street, then head north on State to Third Street.

The lineup will feature more than 20 bands, including a Mummer’s String Band from Philadelphia, bands from Canada, and the 10-time World Champion Junior Corps, plus numerous floats and marching units, re-enactment groups, antique cars, giant helium-filled balloons and more. The organizers are expecting as many as 100,000 people to attend.

Lots of volunteers are needed on the day of the event to make it a success. Among many other tasks, the Perry 200 organizing committee is seeking people to carry banners in the parade; help set up and inflate the helium balloons at the Cathedral Prep Events Center field before the parade; handle the balloons in the parade; assist the parade marshals by escorting buses, trucks and marchers to the lineup or finish areas; clean up after the parade; work as parking lot assistants; and someone to meet the parade units at the end of parade and direct them where to go.

If you are interested in volunteering in this historic event, visit http://www.perry200.com/parade/volunteers/ and fill out the online form, or call Dan Mucci of the Perry 200 Commemoration at 459-8000.

The weeklong event, known as Days of Caring, has more than 30 projects to choose from at various Erie locations. The projects are of all types and sizes, so there’s sure to be something that fits your schedule and your skill level. Volunteers are needed for activities ranging from general cleaning, such as removing trash and debris, to painting, gardening and making minor repairs. Much of the work will be outdoors, so be prepared for all types of weather.

One of the most popular events is the Presque Isle State Park cleanup, which takes place Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. If you want to help get the beaches ready for summer, just show up and register at the Rotary Pavilion between 9 and 11 a.m.

PennDOT is seeking volunteers for this year’s Great American Cleanup of Pennsylvania, which runs through May 31.

The cleanup event is an annual effort sponsored by PennDOT, Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful, the state Department of Environmental Protection and other partners. Groups participating in PennDOT’s Adopt-A-Highway program, which involves volunteers cleaning roadsides year round, are also encouraged to participate in the cleanup.

During the “Pick it Up PA Days,” from April 20 to May 6, registered events will have access to free disposal at participating landfills. PennDOT provides gloves, trash bags and safety vests to AAH and Great American Cleanup of PA groups.

In 2012, more than 141,000 volunteers collected 6.7 million pounds of litter from Pennsylvania’s roads, trails and shorelines during the Great American Cleanup.

“These cleanup programs play a huge role in keeping Pennsylvania beautiful through cleaner roadsides and communities,” said PennDOT Secretary Barry J. Schoch. “It’s my hope that more individuals get involved and join the thousands of dedicated volunteers that participate in these efforts year after year.”

Interested individuals can find a listing of cleanup events, resources for organizing a cleanup, and other information about the effort online at www.gacofpa.org.

Groups interested in adopting a section of highway are encouraged to contact their local PennDOT County Maintenance office and ask for the AAH coordinator, or visit www.dot.state.pa.us.

In addition, this year, cleanup partner Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful is hosting its first-ever Great American Cleanup Video Contest. Interested individuals can send a 3- to 5-minute video of their cleanup event to Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful by May 24. The videos will be made available for the public to vote on online after that date. For contest rules and information, visit www.gacofpa.org.

The Audubon Center & Sanctuary in Jamestown, N.Y., needs volunteers to be able to accommodate the more than 3,000 schoolchildren who visit every spring.

Audubon’s Education Staff is seeking volunteer trail guides to assist with Discovery Walks during this busy season. While you take a walk in the woods, notice the flowers, watch a frog by the pond, and listen to the birds, you will be offering a service to children and earning the staff’s great appreciation.

Those interested are invited to come to Audubon on Wednesday, April 10, from 10 a.m. to noon to meet with Audubon’s naturalists and learn how much fun it can be to help young students explore nature, overcoming their fears and misconceptions.

You will learn more about the trails, what it takes to lead a class of children along them, and the natural history found there. After a brief presentation indoors about the protocols and procedures for a Discovery Walk, the naturalists will walk you along the most popular routes of the walks. They will share activities, information, and hints to make the walk go smoothly.

While this training is designed for new trail guide volunteers, experienced guides are welcome as well.
