The Rally for the Cure Fighter’s Ball will be held on Oct. 13 at The Quality Inn on Liberty Street in Franklin.

The night will feature dinner, dancing, a 50/50 raffle and a silent auction.

Proceeds from the event go to funding breast cancer research in Venango County and research organizations like Rally for the Cure and Susan G. Komen for the Cure. The ball seeks to promote awareness about prevention, detection and treatment of breast cancer.

At the Fighter’s Ball, there will be a “TribFearless Fighters” wall, featuring photos of past and current breast cancer fighters. A $10 donation is requested.

Cost of admittance to the ball is $45 per person. Pre-registration is required for this event.

Lace up those walking shoes. The bi-annual Dave Cooney Parkinson Awareness Walk takes off at 10 a.m. on Saturday at Presque Isle State Park.

Proceeds from the walk go to the Parkinson Foundation of Western Pennsylvania. The money will be used to fund services, support, and education for those afflicted with Parkinson’s disease and their families and support medical research to discover the cause and cure.

An estimated 8,000 to 10,000 people in western Pennsylvania suffer from Parkinson disease. That number soars to 1.5 million in North America and 6 million worldwide.

The Dave Cooney Parkinson Awareness Walk has raised $15,500 for Parkinson research since 2008.

This year’s 3-mile walk starts and ends at the Rotary Pavilion. The event will go off rain or shine.

Day of registration is $20. Fill out this registration form beforehand.

Warm weather is here (at least, for the time being,) and Erieites are shedding off their layers, donning sunglasses and heading outside.

I, for one, signed up for Erie Times-News’ team in the Erie Walks competition. Employees around downtown Erie will form teams, exercise (walking, cycling, running, etc.) for 30 minutes a day and tally how many days they reach that goal during the 8-week competition.

Erie Walks encourages team-building, camaradie and hopefully, the loss of some of that winter weight. Because let’s face it, we could all use that.

Another great way to get outside and get involved is to volunteer for the Erie Sports Commission.

Here’s what they are looking for:

Volunteers are being sought to assist in the process of researching available sporting events, providing assistance to analyze and grow local sports events, or to assist in the administration of area sports activities.

To get involved, download the application online at eriesportscommission.com, call 814-454-1000 or stop at the offices of VisitErie, 208 East Bayfront Parkway.
