With Mitt Romney holding a commanding lead in the race for the Republican nomination, three GOP presidential hopefuls with Pennsylvania roots have something else going against them.
It can be summed up in two words: James Buchanan.
Despite Pennsylvania’s rich history, the 15th president was the only Pennsylvanian to win the White House. And he isn’t highly regarded by historians and political scientists for failing to grasp the political realities on the brink of the Civil War.
His place in history isn’t helped by the face that he was succeeded by Abraham Lincoln.
