Erie School Board losing two longtime members

At the end of 2013, the Erie School Board will lose a collective 53 years of experience.

Eva Tucker Jr., with 31 years on the board, and Jim Herdzik, with 22 years, opted not to seek re-election this year.

The decision from the 77-year-old Tucker was expected.

“It’s time to step aside or allow the sun to set on my school board career,” said Tucker, a retired college professor.

Tucker’s age and health, which is fine, had nothing to do with his decision, he said.

Herdzik’s decision came as somewhat of a surprise. “I just thought it was time to take a break,” said Herdzik, 53, who’s not seeking another office.

“I feel like I’ve done my part,” he said.

Herdzik said the district is on better financial footing, and he’s a lot busier with his job as sales manager at Lamjen Inc., a machine shop.

Eight candidates are seeking four seats in this year’s election, so stay tuned.
