Greco’s council race in 1991 was closer

Andre Horton’s 10-vote win over Lisa Austin for the Democratic nomination for an Erie County Council seat was close.

But it may not have been the closest in council history.

Former Councilwoman Joy Greco, of Millcreek, passes along word that when she ran against 10-year incumbent Robert Walkow in 1991, it was even closer.

For that year’s municipal election,  Walkow appeared to have won by 44 votes. But during the official count three days later, election officials discovered a 50-vote error in Greco’s favor.

That gave Greco a six-vote margin and the victory.

She went on to be elected three more times by sizeable margins, and retired from council in December 2006.

Greco, by the way, has built a sizeable resume in politics.

She served as the first woman appointed to the Millcreek Planning Commission and the Millcreek  Zoning Hearing Board, for a total of 16 years of service.

Greco, a  Democrat, will be on both party ballots in the Nov. 5 election for an auditor position in Millcreek government.

She was unopposed for her party’s nomination, but also won a write-in Republican nomination.

The three-member Board of Auditors meet annually to set the salaries of the Millcreek supervisors.

Horton’s victory held up during an official recount Monday. He will face Republican Ned Smith in the election.
