Betty Wadeck, 64, of Erie, took a rare break from her work as a visiting nurse recently to enjoy an ice cappuccino at Dobbins Landing. She had just had her car washed but was only mildly concerned about the visitor on her roof. Wadeck took the break while she waited for her patients at the Soldiers and Sailors Home to finish their lunches. She's a visiting nurse with the Visiting Nurse Association of Erie County. Wadeck sees hospice patients. "They say it takes a special person to be a hospice nurse, to do this kind of work," she says. "It's rewarding to me because I can watch someone die with dignity because the family is around." With regard to the herring gull on her roof, all she could say was that if it messed on her car, she'd just have to have it washed again. ROB ENGELHARDT/Erie Times-News
