Doctor who helped track down Bin Laden jailed in Pakistan

The BBC reports that the doctor who was instrumental in helping the CIA track down Osama Bin Laden has been jailed for 30 years. And fined $3500.

According to the published report, Dr. Shakil Afridi was charged with treason for running a fake vaccination programme to gather information. Despite Hillary Clinton’s demand that Afridi be released because his actions resulted in an act that served both the U.S. and Pakistan, that country insists that it’s only doing what any other country would do if one of its citizens was found conspiring with a foreign spy agency.

Officials in this country say the move stems from the rift that Bin Laden’s assassination has caused since Pakistan was “embarrassed” that Bin Laden had been successfully hiding within its borders and the doctor’s actions are in no way treasonous.
