The winner is: Eritrea. In honor of World Press Freedom Day, the list was released to underscore the importance of a free press by pointing out those countries where information disseminated to the public is strictly controlled.

According to the article in the Global Post, the list was determined by using “15 benchmarks, including the blocking of websites, restrictions on electronic recording and dissemination, the absence of privately owned or independent media, restrictions on journalist movements, jamming of foreign broadcasts, and blocking of foreign correspondents.”

Eritrea is a small country in Africa that fought to gain independence from Ethiopia in the mid 1990s, being promised by its leader that the new regime would ensure openness. Not.

Not only does Eritrea ban foreign journalists from crossing its borders, all media is controlled by the government, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists.
