Barring men from sitting next to unaccompanied children on airline flights

Virgin Australia and Qantas are coming under attack after both airlines relocated male passengers aboard flights who sat next to unaccompanied minors. One passenger, a professional nurse, said he was humiliated when a Qantas crew member asked the woman across the aisle to switch seats with him without giving a reason. He said she was thanked, but he was not, giving the other passengers the impression that he was in the wrong and making him feel like a “child molester.”

Qantas isn’t alone. Virgin Australia is facing similar criticism for enforcing a similar policy, which male passengers complain is discriminatory because it stereotypes all men as potential pedophiles. While Virgin is reconsidering its stance in the wake of recent backlash, Qantas stands by its decision, claiming that consistent with that of “other airlines around the world and reflects parents’ concerns.”
