Physician assisted suicide legalized in Quebec

Yep, it’s true. Quebec is now the first province in Canada to legalize physician-assisted suicide. According to the Globe and Mail, the new law will take effect before this summer and is the result of a committee’s long term research into end of life issues.

The 175 page report came up with 24 recommendations, one of which legalizes the controversial practice. Citing the move as protecting the dignity and rights of he dying, the committee authorizes physicians to inject lethal levels of drugs into patients who meet four criteria:

The person making the request in competent.

The illness is incurable.

Two physicians have been consulted.

There is a 15-day period of reflection between the request and the final act.

What do you think?
