The inaugural Summer Slam Challenge, a basketball tournament featuring past stars from area universities, is set to begin Saturday at Mercyhurst University.

The tournament, which will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday and end Sunday afternoon, will be played in head-to-head competitions to benefit the Erie Rise Leadership Academy, Grady’s Decision and the Emmaus Ministries. Former players from Gannon, Mercyhurst, Edinboro and Findlay make up in the men’s bracket, while the women’s bracket consists of Gannon, Mercyhurst, Edinboro and Penn State Behrend.

The Gannon men’s team will feature 12 players, including recent graduate Tanner Furno, Joe Lindsey, who started at guard on the Knights’ 2009-10 Elite Eight squad, and Darmel Whitfield, who also starred at quarterback for Gannon.

Mercyhurst and Edinboro will combine to field a team of 11 that notably includes Erie Metro Sports Hall of Famer Justin Shouse and standout guard Torry Mitchell, who played at both schools.

Gannon’s women’s team will consist of nine players, including Jacki Windon and Kristen Roseberry-Kachmar. The Mercyhurst women will field a team of nine that includes former standout and current assistant coach Amy Achesinski.

Behrend and Edinboro will merge to form a team of seven.

The tournament also will conduct a clinic Saturday morning for 30 children ages 7 to 12 years old. The cost for the clinic is $30.

Day passes are $6 for adults and $3 for children, while tournament passes will be $8 and $4, respectively. Games will begin at noon and run until 8 p.m. Saturday before resuming at 10 a.m. Sunday.

The men’s championship game is scheduled for Sunday at 11:30 a.m. and the women’s title game will follow at 1 p.m.
