Major-college football programs throughout the country are getting ready to open practice, and Erie County fans will pay attention to at least a couple camps outside of Pennsylvania.

Connecticut will open practice today, which remains relevant in the Erie area because General McLane graduate Quinn Thompson heads into his first camp with the Huskies. This is the sixth year in a row that a General McLane graduate has been on the UConn roster. Blidi Wreh-Wilson was at UConn for the previous five years before being drafted by the Tennessee Titans.

Michigan State will open practice Saturday. Many Erie fans will closely watch for updates from East Lansing because Cathedral Prep graduates Damion Terry and Delton Williams will try to earn playing time as freshmen — Terry at quarterback and Williams at running back. They led the Ramblers to a state title in 2012.

Meanwhile, Penn State opens its camp Monday, and Pitt begins practice Tuesday. McDowell fans might focus more intently on the Panthers this season because James Conner is a true freshman running back who is seeking playing time.

In Erie County, all three PSAC schools still must wait about two weeks to open practice. Edinboro, Gannon and Mercyhurst are all scheduled to start camp Aug. 15.

We’ll post a list of District 10 grads returning to other major-college football programs at a later date.
