Michigan State opened preseason practice Saturday, and among the new faces were two Cathedral Prep graduates, quarterback Damion Terry and running back/linebacker Delton Williams.

Williams gained some attention Saturday when Michigan State coach Mark Dantonio talked about picking his position. Williams, who played running back and safety in high school, was listed at running back and linebacker in the preseason. However, when the Michigan State’s position-by-position outlook was posted on the team website last week, Williams was listed only at running back.

Dantonio even compared Williams’ physique — he stands 6 feet 1 inch, 220 pounds — to former Michigan State star Le’Veon Bell, who is now a rookie with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

“I think we have to find out if he’s going to play running back — that’s the most immediate need,” Dantonio said on the MSU website. “From there, you make an evaluation on special teams, and then linebacker. He’s a football player. We want to find out what he can do. When he runs around over there, he’s got a twenty-number on (No. 22), he looks a little bit like Le’Veon (Bell) when he runs through there. Now, that’s shorts. That’s a big statement to make. I’m just saying physically, his physical size looks a little bit like that.”

Bell was listed as 6 feet 2 inches, 237 pounds with Michigan State last season. He is now listed at 244 pounds with the Steelers.

A Detroit Free Press story also focused on Williams.

In addition, the Michigan State website featured a photo gallery that included Terry. Check out Terry in photo No. 12.
