Late last week McDowell graduate James Conner appeared close to winning Pitt’s starting job at running back.
On Monday, that wasn’t so clear.
Pitt coach Paul Chryst said that Conner, a true freshman, is “day-to-day” with a shoulder injury he suffered in practice Thursday. Pitt opens the season Monday at 8 p.m. against No. 11 Florida State at Heinz Field.
Meanwhile, Pitt’s two-deep depth chart, which was released today, did not include Conner. Junior Isaac Bennett was listed at No. 1, and redshirt sophomore Malcolm Crockett was at No. 2.
The 6-foot 2-inch, 230-pound Conner had been running with Pitt’s first-team offense for much of the past two weeks.
Lakeview grad Cory King, a senior, is listed as the No. 1 left guard. King started all of Pitt’s 13 games at left tackle in 2012.
