The Mercyhurst University and Allegheny College football programs tasted defeat in their season-opening games Saturday.

The Lakers’ loss came on the road, a down-to-the-wire 17-16 heartbreaker at Bentley (Waltham, Mass.). Allegheny stayed at home but was handled easily in a 37-7 rout courtesy of NCAC-foe Kenyon.

Mercyhurst’s comeback bid fell short as the Lakers trailed by one but could not convert on fourth-and-two with 34 seconds to play. Meanwhile, the Gators could not stop Kenyon’s ground attack as the Lords built a 22-0 lead early in the second quarter and cruised from there.

Despite the losses, several former District 10 players contributed for each team.

Mercyhurst: Lakers junior defensive back Colin Kimball, a McDowell graduate, forced the only turnover of the game with an interception in the third quarter. Kimball also contributed three tackles (two solo) … Senior defensive lineman Dustin Galich, a McDowell graduate, had four tackles (three solo) … T.J. Latimer, a redshirt sophomore fullback/linebacker from Warren, added three tackles (two solo).

Allegheny: Sophomore wide receiver Lucas Morton, a Harbor Creek graduate, had a game-best five catches for 77 yards … Senior linebackers Jake Szoszorek (Iroquois) and Trevor Colvin (Mercyhurst Prep) had five tackles apiece for the Gators … Junior kicker Ryan Mong (McDowell) had an extra point, but he missed on a 26-yard field-goal attempt in the second quarter.
