McDowell graduate James Conner has moved up on the Pitt football team’s depth chart after a strong debut in the Panthers’ opener.

Conner, a true freshman tailback,¬†was not listed on Pitt’s two-deep going into the season opener against Florida State on Sept. 2. However, he rushed for 34 yards on nine carries and ran well against a tough Seminoles defense. He practiced with Pitt’s first team for much of the preseason before suffering a shoulder injury Aug. 22.

Going into Saturday’s game against New Mexico at Heinz Field, Conner is listed at No. 2 on the Pitt depth chart behind junior Isaac Bennett, who started the opener. Bennett rushed nine times for 35 yards and had three receptions for 8 yards against FSU.

New Mexico is 1-1 after a 21-13 loss to Texas-San Antonio on Aug. 31 and a 42-35 victory over the Texas-El Paso on Saturday. New Mexico has allowed an average of 236 yards rushing in its two games.

Lakeview graduate Cory King, a senior, is listed as Pitt’s starter at left guard for the second consecutive game.
