The Penn State Behrend women’s tennis team is off to an outstanding start this season, and a recent Mercyhurst Prep star is one of the Lions leading the way.
Chelsea Czerwinski, a key player on Mercyhurst Prep’s state championship team last season, has excelled at No. 2 singles and No. 1 doubles for Behrend, which is off to a 7-2 start, including a 5-0 mark in the AMCC.
Czerwinski has gone 8-1 at No. 2 singles and has teamed with No. 1 singles player Alexandra Laffey, a freshman from North Allegheny, to compile an 8-0 record at No. 1 doubles.
Czerwinski earned two recent honors when she was named AMCC player of the week and the Behrend Enterprise Rent-A-Car athlete of the week after going 5-0 combined in singles and doubles play last week.
Behrend is undergoing a youth movement under coach Jeff Barger. The nine-player roster features five freshmen and four sophomores.
The Lions will try to bounce back from Tuesday’s non-conference loss to Westminster when they visit Penn State Altoona in an AMCC match Friday at 4 p.m.
