Gannon, former D-10 stars to play in PSAC volleyball tourney

The Gannon women’s volleyball team will make its fifth consecutive postseason appearance today with a visit to Clarion for the PSAC tournament quarterfinals.

The Golden Knights (19-12 overall, 14-8 PSAC) are coming off a five-set upset of California. Today at 7 p.m. they will face Clarion, the PSAC West’s top seed with a 31-3 overall record and a 20-2 conference mark.

Freshmen Hannah Kren and Jordyn Thiery turned in strong performances against Cal. Kren had 22 kills and 11 digs and Thiery added 21 kills and 18 digs.

• No former District 10 standouts play for the Golden Knights, but four former D-10 stars are members of PSAC teams that will compete in the quarterfinals tonight.

• McDowell graduate Bethany Burns is a 5-foot 7-inch junior defensive specialist for Lock Haven, which will visit Pitt-Johnstown tonight. Burns leads the Bald Eagles by a wide margin with 520 digs, more than 150 better than her closest teammate. She ranks second on the team with 35 service aces.

• Another McDowell graduate, Danielle Hayes, plays for California, along with Sharpsville grad Kristen Scurpa.

Hayes, a 5-foot 11-inch freshman middle hitter, has played in 24 matches with 11 starts and has been on a roll during the second half of the season. She has 64 kills with a hitting percentage of .232. Hayes ranks third on the team with 51 blocks.

Scurpa also has asserted herself during the season half of her freshman season. The 5-foot 7-inch setter has made six starts and played in 20 matches. On three occasions, she has compiled more than 50 assists in a match, including a season-high of 55 twice. Scurpa ranks second on the team with 425 assists and is fourth with 157 digs.

Cal will host Seton Hill in a quarterfinal tonight.

• Fort LeBoeuf graduate Maria Peluso has excelled as a freshman for Shippensburg, which will host Millersville tonight. Peluso, the 2012 District 10 Player of the Year, has split time between libero and outside hitter. She has played in all 35 matches, starting 20, and leads with Raiders with 439 digs and 51 service aces.

Peluso played outside hitter in Shippensburg’s most recent match and recorded 15 kills and a .324 hitting percentage in her team’s four-set win over Pitt-Johnstown.
