Girard native Curt Miller continues to turn around the Indiana women’s basketball program in his second season with the Hoosiers.
Indiana beat Milwaukee 87-68 Wednesday to move to 10-0 on the season, all against non-conference opponents. The Hoosiers will play non-conference games at IUPUI (Sunday), Cleveland State (Dec. 21) and Xavier (Dec. 29) before opening the Big Ten Conference season Jan. 2 at home against Iowa.
Miller and the Hoosiers had a similar hot start in 2012-13 when they posted a 9-4 record before going 2-14 in Big Ten play. They finished with an 11-19 overall mark in Miller’s first season, a significant improvement over Indiana’s 6-24 record in 2011-12.
Miller previously led Bowling Green to a 258-92 record in 11 seasons, including eight Mid-American Conference titles, five MAC Tournament titles and five NCAA Tournament appearances.
A familiar face for Erie basketball fans, Karlee McBride, is playing for Indiana this season. McBride is a 5-foot 10-inch freshman guard who was a three-time all-state selection with Villa Maria. McBride, of course, is the younger sister of Kayla McBride, an All-American with Notre Dame a few hours north of Bloomington, Ind., in South Bend.
Karlee McBride originally committed to Bowling Green, but she switched to Indiana after Miller landed the Hoosiers’ coaching position. She has received playing time in nine games and is averaging 3.8 points per game. She is shooting 32 percent (8-of-25) from 3-point range.
