McBride named All-American before Notre Dame’s big game

Villa Maria graduate and Notre Dame standout Kayla McBride was one of 10 women’s players named All-Americans by the United States Basketball Writers Association today.

McBride, a senior guard, was joined by teammate Jewell Loyd, a sophomore guard. McBride has averaged 17.4 points, 5.3 rebounds and 3.9 assists per game while helping the Irish to a No. 2 national ranking and a 35-0 record.

Unbeaten and No. 1 Connecticut has three players on the team, seniors Stefanie Dolson and Bria Hartley and sophomore Breanna Stewart. Also on the USBWA list are Penn State’s Maggie Lucas, Stanford’s Chiney Ogwumike, Louisville’s Shoni Schimmel, Baylor’s Odyssey Sims and Maryland’s Alyssa Thomas.

Notre Dame will face Sims and Baylor tonight in an Elite Eight game in South Bend, Ind. The Irish and Lady Bears will tip off at 7:30 p.m. in a game that will be televised by ESPN.

The winner of the game will face either Louisville or Maryland in the Final Four on Sunday.
