The Fighting Irish will meet a strong Maryland team led by All-America forward Alyssa Thomas, and they’ll have to do it without their top inside player. Notre Dame learned today that standout forward Natalie Achonwa, its premier inside player, will miss the Final Four with a torn ACL in her left knee. She suffered the injury in the Irish’s win over Baylor on Monday in the Notre Dame Regional final.
Notre Dame and Maryland will face each other Sunday at 6:30 p.m. at Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena. The game will be televised by ESPN. The winner of that game will play the winner of the UConn-Stanford semifinal Tuesday night in the national title game.
McBride and Notre Dame teammates Achonwa and Jewell Loyd learned today that they were named AP All-Americans, along with Maryland’s Thomas and several UConn players. McBride and Loyd were named All-Americans on Monday as well.
