CollegeBaseCollege Kickoff Countdown is a daily series on the On Campus blog. There are now 19 days until the opening day of the 2014 season.

Number of the day: 19

Dietrich Jells

Dietrich Jells

That’s the number of yards per reception that Tech Memorial graduate Dietrich Jells averaged during his Pitt career from 1991-95. Actually, Jells averaged 18.8 yards per reception, but if you round that total up, it’s 19. Earlier this week, Jells was featured in a Varsity Kickoff Countdown post, which noted that he averaged 23 yards per catch in his high school career.

In a Panthers career that spanned parts of five seasons, Jells compiled 160 receptions for 3,003 yards and 25 touchdowns.

His top season came in 1992 when he had 55 catches for 1,091 yards and eight TDs as a sophomore.

The Kansas City Chiefs picked Jells in the sixth round of the 1996 NFL draft. He was a member of the New England Patriots as a rookie and played for the Philadelphia Eagles over a four-year career that saw him record 12 catches for 247 yards and two touchdowns.
