Number of the day: 2

Jim Corbett

Jim Corbett

That’s the number of starters from Erie that the Pitt had on its 1976 national championship team. McDowell graduate Jim Corbett and  Cathedral Prep grad John Hanhauser both started for the Panthers.

Corbett, a 6-foot 4-inch, 228-pound senior tight end, led the Panthers with 34 receptions and 538 yards and scored two touchdowns.

Of course, Pitt did not rely heavily on its passing game that season because it featured Heisman Trophy winner Tony Dorsett.

Dorsett rushed for 2,150 yards and 22 touchdowns while leading the Panthers to a 12-0 record, including a 27-3 win over Georgia in the Sugar Bowl.

Corbett also led the Panthers with 24 receptions as a junior. He finished his college career with 76 receptions for 1,087 yards and five TDs. The Cincinnati Bengals drafted Corbett in the seventh round of the 1977 NFL draft, and he went on to play four seasons in the NFL.

Hanhauser was a 6-foot 2 1/2-inch, 255-pound offensive tackle for Pitt as a senior in 1976. He also started as a junior. He was named as an honorable-mention All-American by the Associated Press.
