Pat Crawford beach, Edinboro

The Tuesday Night Race League group will be heading south to Edinboro this week.

Meet at 7 p.m. at Pat Crawford Beach on Lake Side Drive on the Edinboro Lake (Edinboro Triathlon location). Directions:
Tak I-90 to Edinboro Exit, turn north on Route 6N…Lake Side Drive is on the left side of 6N…a few miles down the road – near the Bagel Deli (may be just before it…can’t remember now).

As always…the TNRL is free and open to runners/walkers of all abilities. Two course options (shorter & longer) are typically given. You’ll follow the directions/map yourself…no marshals, waterstops, etc. It’s a very informal, but fun.

TNRL Explained

From the ERC June newsletter, a note about Tuesday Night Race League (TNRL) from founder, Jim Lang (owner of Big White Trailer timing):

It’s just a name. You do NOT have to be fast or furry to come out and run. Sometimes we have clocks & timing, other times we just go out and run. The key is that it’s happening all over Erie County (and sometimes just outside) and is open to anyone.

Come out & have a good time. Post-race there is usually water, sometimes snacks, and sometimes “adult” beverages. Anyone is free to bring anything they like, to hoard or to share. Unless I don’t know your name, or you tell me you don’t want the info posted, I’m going to write down what you did, how you did it, and gossip about you “afta-afta” the run.

All information is available at www.TuesdayNightRacingLeague.com (spelled just like it sounds). Check out some of the results (and the comments) about the events.

We’re on Facebook, too – Facebook.com/TuesdayNightRacingLeague

Our current schedule:
June 10 – Albion (Reservoir Road)
June 17 – Edinboro Lake – Pat Crawford Beach (Edinboro Tri location)
June 24 – Girard (Dan Rice course)
July 1 – Liberty Park on the Bayfront (Frontier and Dock courses)
ALL EVENTS ARE AT 7 PM.

Tuesday Night Race League returns 5/27/14

By | May 22, 2014 1:19 am | 0 Comments

With summer upon us now (or close enough, Jim Lang, owner of Big White Trailer timing, is resurrecting the Tuesday Night Race League, a casual and totally free weekly “race” or run series (depending on how you want to handle it) held in various places throughout Erie County.

Here’s the basic who, what, when, where and why about TNRL from Jim’s TNRL page on his website:

Who?

Me, you, and anyone else that wants to get out

What?

An opportunity to get out and run a “race” at various locations in Erie County. There will be at least one REAL race this summer, perhaps more. They will be announced well in advance.

When?

Tuesday Nights, 7:00 pm. from Spring to Fall.

Where?

Locations throughout Erie County.

Why?

Why not? This is an opportunity to get out, run a different race every week, and generally have a good time.

Afta-Afta

It’s what happens afta the race. If you don’t get the reference, check out “The Karate Kid“. Mr. Miyagi is a real hero here.

So, it basically works like this.

Jim picks various locations all over Erie County and plots an informal course for runners to “race.” (I put that in quotes because while it’s called the “race” league — some of us just show up to run with other people).  There is typically a shorter distance (3 to 4 miles) and longer distance (5 to 6) for you to choose from.

It’s very informal. For instance, there are times you will finish & write down your own time if Jim’s out running.

It’s basically an opportunity (a standing invitation) to have fun and run in different places with friends.

There’s no cost to participate in the TNRL events and, so, there are no t-shirts, race refreshments, etc., though Jim typically brings water and the other racers bring beer or whatever (depending on the location, of course, some locations are alcohol-free zones).

Why participate?

1. It’s a fun way to get some mid-week speed work in.

2. It’s also a good way to get to know some other runners.

3. It’s refreshing to race somewhere other than Presque Isle.

First up: Harborcreek Community Park – May 27

The first TNRL is scheduled for next Tuesday, May 27 at Harborcreek Community Park , 5800 Firman Road. If it’s the same as in past years, you’ll have a choice of doing a 3.2 mile course or a 6.2 mile course.  More info & course descriptions here.

A schedule of upcoming TNRL race locations can be found here (not updated with the 2014 schedule yet, but it will be soon).

News & notes: Bull Dam run, Erie Marathon, TNRL and more

A few random running news & notes:

Bull Dam run is Sunday

Sunday morning (9 a.m.) is the 2nd annual Hitting the Trails run at Eaton Reservoir (Bulls Dam), 10021 Ashton Rd, North East, PA 16428. The race director is offering both a 5K course and a 10K (more challenging, more trail) course. Here are all the details:

5K walk runners: You’ll be running/ walking on the grass/ gravel multi-purpose trail around the reservoir. Keep the water to the right and you can’t get lost. It is a loop course. This is a great course for entry level trail runners.

10K runners: You will be running on grass, woodland terrain, dirt, leaves etc. on a majestic winding well marked trail through the woods around the reservoir. Much of this run is completed on single tract trails. There will be plenty of opportunities to pass the competition on straight-aways. This is a run that will take you through pines, hardwoods, open areas, with some challenges of minor hills challenges. This course is largely based on trail biking routes existing onsite.

AND….there will be pancakes after, provided (and cooked) by the Greg’s Boy Scout Troop 82 of North East who are benefitting from the race. NOTE: There are not age group awards for this race because it’s a fundraiser, but…there are pancakes…and that’s better than any medal, plaque or certificate, right?

Registration, application and more information here.

Erie Marathon needs you

The Erie Marathon committee sent out the following plea earlier this week. If you’re not running, consider giving back and volunteering. (I’ll be working registration on Saturday and I’ll be road marshaling (and CHEERING) on Sunday).

19 Days until the ERC Marathon/Half Marathon and we need volunteers!
Races cannot be held unless there are volunteers and the Erie Runners Club has the best!

We need people for parking on Sunday, 5:00 am. and we need  Road Marshals, Sunday, 6:30 AM

If you are confirmed, Thank you!

Not sure, Contact David Comi at 814-881-0060 or Teresa Wigham, twigham@roadrunner.com.

Please leave your name, phone number, email address, the area you would like to work and shirt size.

TNRL is Wrapping Up !?!

Seems like just yesterday Jim Lang was telling us that the Tuesday Night Racing League was starting up again and here it is already winding down. Fall schedules and shorter days make it hard to continue the TNRL after September. And, besides, it’s something to look forward to in the spring, right?

There are just two TNRL’s remaining. They are:

September 3, 2013 – North East Cherry Runs – Gibson Park, North East

September 10, 2013 – 6:30 start – Evanoff home – 4550 South Hill Rd, McKean PA (Season Finale!)

More info about TNRL here.

Newsletter Stuffing  moved to Sept. 3

Note that due to the Monday holiday, the ERC newsletter stuffing “party” will be moved forward one evening to Tuesday, September 3 at 7 pm. at the Plymouth Tavern (usually in the front room). First, you help collate, fold, tape and label the ERC newsletter, then you enjoy free wings, pretzels and beer/softdrinks courtesy of the club.

Biggest Loser race photos

The Biggest Loser official race photos are up and they are free, free, free for you to download! Check them out here. (Mine are…as always…appalling. I will never give you my bib number…never!).

BTW — word has it that race is being moved to Penn State Behrend next year. Waaaahhhh?  Hit the hills my friends, no avoiding them up here in these parts!

TNRL in Waterford tonight

By | August 6, 2013 5:37 am | 0 Comments

Tonight’s Tuesday Night Race League run is in Waterford, but it’s not the Waterford 5K course.

Meet on the west side of Waterford Square. Intersection of W North Park Row and Walnut Street.

Jim typically offers both a short course (4 miles or less) and a longer course (6+ miles).

Run starts at 7 p.m. and runners of all ages & abilities are welcome. This is a great way to make new friends/meet runners and…it’s free. It’s also informal (no bibs, chips, formal timing, etc.).

More info on the TNRL here.

Newsletter stuffing tonight, TNRL tomorrow night

By | June 3, 2013 5:43 am | 0 Comments

Tonight is the Erie Runner’s Club newsletter stuffing night. All hands are welcome and you’ll be compensated with beer, soda, chicken wings and pretzels after the work is done.   Meet at the Plymouth Tavern in the loft by the 2nd bar at the patio at 7 p.m. All are welcome. This is a good way to meet other runners…get to know others as you chat and fold, stuff, tape and label.

Tomorrow night (Tuesday) the TRNL offering is at Liberty Park. Starts at 7 p.m. More info on the Tuesday Night Race League here, but basically it’s a casual gathering of runners (all ages and abilities) who get together once a week to race (or just run) courses around Erie County. There’s usually a short offering (3-5 miles) and a longer one (6-8 miles).  There’s no cost to participate…but there’s also no fancy bibs or chips or awards. There is a clock and Jim Lang usually brings water, too. Sometimes the other runners bring other…ahem…refreshments.

1. It’s a fun way to get some mid-week speed work in.

TNRL in Fairview This Week

By | September 16, 2012 7:05 pm | 0 Comments

This week’s Tuesday Night Race League offering — likely the last TNRL of 2012 — is in Fairview. Meet in the High School parking lot by the pool entrance at 6:30 p.m.

Afta-afta party at Chico’s!

More info on the TNRL here.

ERC Meeting & TNRL

By | September 9, 2012 7:18 pm | 0 Comments

ERC Membership Meeting

This week’s ERC Membership meeting will be held at Glenwood Park at 6 p.m.  Free hot dogs and soda/water. Bring something to share…if you want (not required).

They typically take the first shelter, next to the zoo, but it’s first-come-first-serve, so they could be at a different shelter. Look for lean people wearing race t-shirts/sweatshirts.  :-)

TNRL at Evanoff’s

This week’s Tuesday Night Race League run will be held at Fred & Rana Evanoff’s place, 4550 South Hill Road, McKean.

Don’t let “McKean” scare you off, it’s not that far out.

And, besides, what should scare you is McKean, which is notoriously hilly, especially around the Evanoff’s place.

The company and the afta-afta chit-chat make it all worth it though. ;-)

Run starts at 6:30 p.m.
