HOCKEY EXTRA: Lady Lions blanked in national 19U opener

DIMONDALE, Mich. – The Erie Lady Lions had a rough start to their first national championship event.

They lost 12-0 to the Massachusetts Spitfires on Wednesday in their opening pool-play game in the USA Hockey Tier I Girls 19U National Championships. Only the first eight goals count toward the standings.

The Lady Lions (0-1) face Team Wyoming (0-1) in pool-play action on Thursday at 10:20 a.m.

In Woodridge, Ill., the Buffalo Regals lost 7-1 to Detroit Belle Tire in the USA Hockey Tier I Boys 18U National Championships on Wednesday. McDowell seniors Shane Reese, a forward, and Ryan Sedney, a defenseman had no points. Sedney had two penalty minutes. The Regals (0-1) face the Mid-Fairfield Blues (0-1) in their second pool-play game Thursday at 11:30 a.m.

The Pittsburgh Hornets lost 2-1 in overtime to three-time national champion Shattuck-St. Mary’s (Minn.) in their opening game. Erie Otters defense prospect Kevin Zugec, a Pittsburgh native, didn’t record a point for the Hornets (0-0-1), which face the Boston Jr. Bruins (1-0) on Thursday at 11:15 a.m.
