MOON TOWNSHIP – The Mercyhurst University women’s hockey team made history Saturday afternoon, but not for a good reason.
The fourth-ranked Lakers were swept in a two-game College Hockey America series for the first time in the conference’s 11-year history, as they lost to rival Robert Morris 2-1 in front of 202 fans at RMU Island Sports Center. Mercyhurst also lost 3-1 to RMU Friday night.
Mercyhurst (14-3-1, 6-2-0 CHA) was last swept in any regular-season series more than four years ago – by Clarkson Oct. 24-25, 2008. They have lost two straight regular-season games for the first time since October 2011.
The Lakers dominated RMU statistically in the series finale, as they outshot the Colonials 41-23. But RMU goaltender Kristen DiCiocco made 40 saves to outduel Lakers senior Stephanie Ciampa, who earned her first loss of the season in 10 games. DiCiocco allowed only Shelby Bram’s power-play goal with 5 minutes, 39 seconds left in the game.
After a scoreless first period, the Colonials (9-3-2, 5-1-0) built a 2-0 lead on power-play goals scored less than three minutes apart by Dayna Newsom and Thea Imbrogno. RMU recorded 13 of its 23 shots on goal in the middle period.
The Lakers, which head into the Christmas break, begin the second half Jan. 3 with a 7 p.m. exhibition game against the Buffalo Bison at Mercyhurst Ice Center. They resume regular-season action Jan. 11 at home against Syracuse.
