The Pittsburgh Pirates have had some top players pass through Jerry Uht Park in the past when the Altoona Curve have played there.
The Pirates should have some high-end talent come through later, too, with the likes of Gerrit Cole, Jameson Taillon and Josh Bell.
But that doesn’t mean when the Curve arrive at Jerry Uht Park for a four-games series starting tonight at 6:35 there won’t be any players to watch.
The highest-rated prospect on the Altoona Curve is former Pirates’ No. 1 pick Tony Sanchez.
Sanchez, 23, has struggled to start the season, hitting .236. He was the fourth overall pick by the Pirates in 2009. He’s ranked seventh by Baseball America in the Pirates’ farm. He could be the Bucs’ catcher of the future.
There’s also Robbie Grossman, 22, a 6-foot outfielder. He had 13 home runs and 24 stolen bases for Bradenton last season. He’s ranked eighth by BA in the Pirates’ farm. He’s struggling right now, hitting .198, but he has pop and can run.
Matt Curry, 23, doesn’t appear on BA’s list of top 10 prospects for the Pirates, but he is a first baseman to keep an eye on. He’s big (6-1, 225) and has developing power. He enters today’s game with a .292 average.
