The Erie SeaWolves open a three-game series against the Binghamton Mets tonight at Jerry Uht Park.
Binghamton has the Mets’ top-rated prospect, according to Baseball America.
Zack Wheeler, who is scheduled to pitch Sunday, is the top prospect in the Mets’ system. He also is the 35th-best prospect, according to BA. Wheeler, 21, is a big right-handed pitcher (6-4) who averages more than a strikeout per inning (24Ks, 20 IP). His fastball can hit the mid-90s and complements it with a nice curve.
Also, keep an eye on outfielder Matt Den Dekker, a left-handed hitter. Den Dekker is a power-speed player. He hit 17 homers and stole 24 bases in high-A and Class AA last season. He enters the series with a .308 average, but does strike out.
Finally, check out Jefry Marte, a third baseman. The 21-year-old has a .358 average. He’s hit safely in his past six games. While he’s supposed to have raw power, he’s still looking for his first home run this season.
