‘Wolves squander chances at Altoona

The Erie SeaWolves outhit Altoona Friday night.

The problem was not enough were key hits.

Erie stranded nine runners on base and were 2-for-12 in with them in scoring position. The Curve’s three-spot in the bottom of the third inning held up for a 3-2 victory at Peoples Natural Gas Field.

The SeaWolves dropped to 20-19 in the teams’ weekend series opener, while Altoona moved to 17-22. The Curve were swept in four at Jerry Uht Park last weekend, but have won four straight since then.

Jordan Lennerton and Tony Plagman drove in Erie’s runs, while Jamie Johnson and Ben Guez each had two hits. James Avery pitched 7 2/3 innings, but lost in his bid to become the team’s first six-game victor.

Jarek Cunningham’s two-run double was the big hit in Altoona’s third.

The series resumes Saturday at 6 p.m.
