McCann’s debut dicey in Erie loss

It wasn’t quite the start that James McCann sought with the Erie SeaWolves.

McCann, the Detroit Tigers’ No. 1 pick in the 2011 amateur draft, singled in his first career Double-A at-bat Thursday night. However, the touted catcher also allowed a passed ball, was picked off at second two batters after his third-inning single, and struck out with the bases loaded and two outs in the fourth.

Those miscues aided the Thunder en route to their 5-1 victory at Jerry Uht Park. Erie slumped to 28-30 in the Eastern League’s Western Division, with Trenton (34-24) trenched in first for its Eastern Division.

The Thunder departed with a final record of 9-3 for the teams’ season series.

Niuman Romero and Jordan Lennerton each had two hits for Erie. Romero drove in the SeaWolves’ lone run with a fifth-inning triple.

Center fielder Jamie Johnson extended his hitting streak to 10 games, Erie’s second longest of 2012.

The Thunder’s David Adams drove in three runs without a hit. The second baseman recorded two sacrifice flies and an RBI groundout.
