SeaWolves victorious in Virginia finale

Erie pitcher Kelvin De La Cruz gave up a leadoff home run to Richmond’s Gary Brown, only to shut down the Flying Squirrels for the ensuing seven innings of Sunday’s Eastern League game at The Diamond.

De La Cruz allowed three hits after Brown’s blast. Reliever Michael Morrison followed with two shutout innings for the SeaWolves’ 5-1 victory.

Erie (27-28) won two of three in its only regular-season series at Virginia, with the Squirrels now 26-31.

The SeaWolves ended a tie score with four runs in the top of the seventh inning, when they chased Richmond starter Justin Fitzgerald. Brandon Douglas, who tied the game at 1-1 with a sacrifice fly in the fifth, also contributed to the go-ahead rally with an RBI double.

Rawley Bishop and Wade Gaynor combined for three of Erie’s five runs and five of its nine hits.

The SeaWolves are off Monday. They begin a six-game homestand with Tuesday’s three-game series opener against Trenton.
