‘Wolves no match for New Britain

The New Britain Rock Cats ended two losing streaks with one dominant victory over the Erie SeaWolves.

New Britain halted a six-game skid with Saturday’s 6-0 shutout. The win also was its first at Jerry Uht Park since Aug. 6, 2009.

Andrew Albers and two relievers combined on a five-hit shutout for the Rock Cats, who moved to 33-27 in the Eastern League’s Eastern Division. Erie dropped to 29-31 in the Western Division.

Conversely, the Rock Cats clobbered 16 hits off five Erie pitchers, including starter Kelvin De La Cruz. Chris Herrmann had four of them, with Chris Colabello’s solo home run one of his three.

Evan Bigley, Nathan Hanson and James Beresford were other multiple hitters for the Connecticut club.

Brandon Douglas recorded two of Erie’s five singles. Jamie Johnson accounted for one to extend his hitting streak to 12 straight games, one short of matching Rob Brantly’s 13-game run between April 20 and May 6.

Former SeaWolves player Shawn Roof was picked off as a pinch-runner for the Rock Cats.

Erie welcomed Austin Wood back to its bullpen after his two-day cameo with Triple-A Toledo. The left-hander returned to the SeaWolves before Saturday’s game when the Detroit Tigers optioned reliever Jose Ortega to the Mud Hens.

The transaction restored Erie’s roster to its 25-man maximum.
