Indians roll dice with Matsuzaka

Saturday night, it was Jason Giambi.

On Sunday, the Cleveland Indians announced the pending deal of another player who has seen better days: Daisuke Matsuzaka.

The deal is pending a physical, but it looks like Dice-K will get a shot at the Indians’ rotation.

Matsuzaka, 32, went 1-7 last season with the Red Sox with an 8.28 ERA.

He’ll join Scott Kazmir (another post-prime pitcher), Trevor Bauer (young pitcher with upside), Carlos Carrasco, Corey Kluber and David Huff for the No. 5 spot in the rotation.

The Associated Press reported Matsuzaka gets a $1.5 million, one-year contract if he’s added to the 40-man roster. He also has a chance to earn $2.5 million in performance bonuses.

It’s a low-risk move, but one that doesn’t generate much buzz. I’d much rather see Bauer learn his craft in Cleveland than Dice-K try to find his lost game.
