The Erie SeaWolves didn’t have a defined closer heading into the 2013 season, but Justin Souza souzahas certainly filled that role. Souza has collected seven saves this season and is 2-0 with a 2.35 ERA. In his last eight appearances, Souza, 27, has allowed two runs on six hits in 72⁄3 innings for an ERA of 2.35. He picked up his eighth save Saturday night. The reliever came to the Detroit Tigers in a 2009 trade for Jack Hannahan and is having an impressive season. He could be the SeaWolves’ go-to pitcher to close out games the rest of the season.

Former Erie SeaWolves outfielder Avisail Garcia is on his way to Detroit.

The Tigers placed Austin Jackson on the DL Monday with a bad hammy and recalled Garcia from Triple-A Toledo.

Garcia was hitting .432 with one homer and four RBIs in eight games for the Mud Hens.

Garcia hit .312 with six home runs and 22 RBIs for Erie last season. He played in 12 postseason games and had 23 at-bats with the Tigers in the playoffs last season.

There’s a buck night at Jerry Uht Park tonight, but fans of good pitching should plan to visit the Uht on Tuesday at 6:35 p.m.

The Reading Fightin Phils’ Jesse Biddle is scheduled to start against the Erie SeaWolves’ Warwick Saupold.

Biddle is the Philadelphia Phillies’ top prospect and is one of the best left-handed pitchers in the minors.

The 6-4, 225-pound 21-year-old recently was named the Eastern League’s Player of the Month. On April 22, Biddle was perfect through six innings against the Harrisburg Senators. Biddle finished that game with 16 strikeouts in just seven innings of work.

Biddle is 2-2  this season with a 2.70 ERA. He has 45 strikeouts in 36.2 innings. He has a WHIP below 1.00.

If you go to the game, notice Biddle’s three above-average pitches. He has a fastball that usually hits 94. He has improved his changeup and his curve can be a nasty strikeout pitch. Last year in the Florida State League, Biddle led the league in Ks. He projects as a future No. 2 starter for the Phils.

Here’s more coverage on Biddle:

willstartupWill Startup has been one of the most consistent pitchers in the Detroit Tigers organization this season.

Startup has a 2.18 ERA with four saves. All four of his saves have been two innings or more. He recently tossed four quality innings in a 6-4 win over Bowie to earn the save before throwing the final two innings Friday in a 6-3 win over Altoona.

He has 19 strikeouts to five walks this season and is fourth among all Detroit minor-league pitchers in ERA.

Startup is also fifth in opponent’s batting average at .222 and is tied for the lead with four saves.
