The Akron Aeros forced a fifth and deciding game in their Eastern League playoff series against the Bowie Baysox Saturday.

Akron, the Western Division champion, edged the wild-card Baysox 2-1 at Canal Park. The Aeros will have the chance to rally from an 0-2 series defecit if they can beat Bowie in Sunday’s 7:05 p.m. finale.

Trenton remained up 2-1 in its Eastern Division series against Reading when Saturday’s fourth game was postponed by poor weather. The scheduled first pitch for Sunday’s game wasn’t immediately listed by the league.

Sunday’s cancelled game at Jerry Uht Park meant the Erie SeaWolves will have more than 48 hours off until they resume their dwindling regular season.

Erie (53-66) was originally scheduled to be idle for a third consecutive Monday. The SeaWolves will then travel to Bowie for the first of two August series against the Baysox (62-58) at Prince George’s Stadium.

The teams’ four-game series begins with Tuesday’s 6:05 p.m. doubleheader. Those two seven-inning games were necessitated by an April 22 rain out in Maryland.

Sunday’s Eastern League game between the Erie SeaWolves and  the Portland Sea Dogs at Jerry Uht Park was called off around 1:10 p.m. because of inclement weather.

The game will not be made up because of the teams’ records and travel distance. Erie was 53-66 in the Eastern League’s Western Division and Portland 55-65 in its Eastern Division.

Fans who had tickets for Sunday’s game can exchange them for a future game.

The SeaWolves are off Monday, and then open a four-game series at Bowie with a Tuesday doubleheader. They return to Jerry Uht Park for a six-game homestand that starts Friday.

The Erie SeaWolves and Portland Sea Dogs avoided Friday’s bad weather that passed through Erie County.

The Sea Dogs, though, had no such luck getting out of the way of Erie during the latter’s sixth-inning rally at Jerry Uht Park.

Erie sent 11 batters to the plate that inning, a stretch which resulted in seven runs. James McCann’s two-run, hit-and-run double highlighted the rally for the SeaWolves, who won 9-2 in the teams’ three-game series opener.

It was only the second time that Erie (52-66) won consecutive games since baseball’s all-star break. It also was the first time the SeaWolves won back-to-back at home since July 5-6.

The Erie SeaWolves and Altoona Curve will now play two doubleheaders at Peoples Natural Gas Field.

The second one will take place Sunday, with the first game scheduled for 5 p.m. That doubleheader was necessitated when Thursday’s five-game series opener was postponed by rain.

The first one was originally scheduled for Friday at 6 p.m. The Eastern League arranged those seven-inning contests because it didn’t play Easter Sunday, the day after the SeaWolves and Curve completed their season-opening series at Altoona.

The doubleheaders will sandwich Saturday’s single nine-inning game, with a first pitch scheduled for 7 p.m.

Binghamton Mets starter Zack Wheeler was the bigger factor in Sunday’s 7-1 victory over the Erie SeaWolves.

Still, it was impossible for manager Chris Cron and pitching coach Ray Burris to ignore the 10 walks issued by Erie’s four pitchers. That hefty total left the team with an even 100, which easily leads the Eastern League.

Wheeler, considered the New York Mets’ top prospect, walked three in his 5 2/3 innings against the SeaWolves (9-12). However, the right-hander only allowed two hits to Erie batters, struck out six and lowered his earned-run average to 1.75.

Meanwhile, Binghamton (12-10) rocked Mark Sorensen for five quick runs and chased the SeaWolves starter after only two innings. Sorensen, called up from Single-A Lakeland (Fla.) to fill in for the injured Jay Voss, hasn’t made it to the third inning for either of his Erie starts.

The Erie SeaWolves’ win column got bigger Saturday, even though the goatee of pitching coach Ray Burris probably got whiter.

Erie pitchers experienced a serious problem with multiple late-inning walks for its second game in less than 24 hours. However, unlike Friday’s loss to the Binghamton Mets, the SeaWolves overcame that baseball bugaboo for Saturday afternoon’s 3-2 victory at chilly Jerry Uht Park.

Reliever Kenny Faulk allowed a bloop hit that produced Binghamton’s second run in the top of the eighth inning. However, the powerful left-hander prevented the Mets from tying the score with the bases loaded, and then denied them in the ninth for his first career Double-A save.

The SeaWolves moved to 9-11 overall, while Binghamton is now 11-10. The teams will conclude their three-game series Sunday at 1:35 p.m.

Erie hasn’t played since Saturday’s 4-3 victory at Bowie. Sunday’s finale of their weekend series was postponed because of heavy rain, with the SeaWolves originally scheduled off Monday.
Mark Sorensen is still scheduled to be Erie’s starting pitcher Tuesday.  Sorensen, called up from Single-A Lakeland (Fla.) to fill in for the injured Jay Voss, went 7-7 for the 2011 SeaWolves.
