It wouldn’t be New Year’s Eve without resolutions for the Pittsburgh Pirates. Here’s what I’d like to see in 2014:
Add to the payroll. The Pirates long have been called cheap. Now that they have a winner, they need to keep it that way. They should open the wallets in January and make a good team better. Help at first is a priority.
Hope for more rookie impact. Gerrit Cole created a buzz in 2013. We could see the same thing with pitcher Jameson Taillon and outfielder Gregory Polanco.
Another payoff from reclamation projects. A.J. Burnett and Francisco Liriano paid off for the Pirates. Will Edison Volquez?
Return of Burnett. Burnett could be a key for the rotation in 2014. Will he return? He’s talked about retirement.
Crystall-ball magic. I’d like to see the contract extension dolled out to Charlie Morton look like a good one, not a bad one.
Brilliant bullpen. Can Jason Grilli and Mark Melancon keep things up next season? If they do, things look good.
Happy New Year, everyone.
