There were plenty of pleasant surprises on the Pirates last season.
You can add pitcher Jeff Locke’s first-half performance to the list.
He went 8-2 with a 2.15 ERA before the All-Star break, getting a spot on the NL team.
After, however, it was a different story.
Locke struggled, big time. He went 2-5 with a 6.12 ERA in the second half.
Some attributed his struggles to a back issue.
I think the rest of the league caught up to him.
Whatever the case, Locke could be a big addition to the Pirates’ rotation this season.
However, he had a setback last week, feeling pain in his oblique.

I don’t think the Bucs can count on him to be the first-half pitcher from 2013. If he can be an innings-eater, it would be a plus.
The big thing is simply getting healthy.
