Celebrating MLK Day through basketball…

Whether it’s on the national, regional or local scene, basketball and Martin Luther King Jr. Day have become synonymous with each other.

Nationally, the NBA will have three games televised on TNT on the national holiday Monday that including a rematch of last year’s NBA Finals when the Orlando Magic play at Los Angeles against the defending champion Lakers.

Locally, the MLK Showcase will have five high school games Sunday at the Hammermill Center involving teams from Erie and surrounding states in New York and Ohio. This is in its first year, but under the direction of showcase director, Michael X Anderson, it has the potential to really become a mainstay in Erie.

Regionally, the Cleveland Cavaliers will have Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Tribute Night on Tuesday when they play the Toronto Raptors at Quicken Loans Arena. The Cavaliers will honor Ohio sports legends Jim Brown, Cris Carter, Jim “Mudcat” Grant and Jimmy Jackson for the sixth annual Black Heritage Celebration.
