Christian Laettner

Christian Laettner says you got to start your coaching career somewhere.

He’s chosen to do so with the Fort Wayne Mad Ants.

I caught up with the former Duke All-American, who led the Blue Devils to back-to-back national titles 20 years ago in 1992, at shootaround earlier this afternoon before tonight’s game at 7 against the Erie BayHawks at Tullio Arena.

Laettner is in his first year as an assistant with the Mad Ants. Below he talks about being an assistant and how much of his coaching style is a reflection of playing for Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski.

Laettner talks being an assistant coach.

If the New York Knicks use their lone pick (17th overall selection) in the 2011 NBA Draft to take BYU All-American guard Jimmer Fredette (if he’s available), then they will get more than just player who led the NCAA in scoring as a senior in 2010-11 with a 28.9 scoring average.

They will get someone who brings excitement to the game. With an array of shots and a scorer’s mentality, he’d fit into the type of offensive system Knicks coach Mike D’Antoni likes.

On Tuesday’s PTI on ESPN, Fredette said he’d like to play for the Knicks, but if that happens, what are the chances he’ll see action in the D-League with the Erie BayHawks in 2011-12? Fredette can score, but needs to improve defensively and may need work on getting his shot off against better talent.

In either case, Erie fans just may see Fredette next season. Below is a glimpse of what he can do.

First it was Scottie Reynolds.

Now it’s Sherron Collins’ turn to play in Tullio Arena for the visiting team.

Collins will be the second All-American point guard to face Erie when the Maine Red Claws play against the BayHawks tonight (7 p.m.). The Charlotte Bobcats sent down Collins, an undrafted rookie out of Kansas, to the D-League.

Reynolds was first when Springfield played at Erie. The Armor and BayHawks split two games. Reynolds averaged 21 points in the two games against Erie.

Take a look at Collins scoring 32 points in in the NBA Summer League.
