The Erie BayHawks added 6-7 guard Devin Green out of Hampton University to their roster today through the D-League’s allocation rule.

The rule allows D-League teams to acquire up to three players waived from training camps of their NBA affiliates. The New York Knicks, who are Erie’s hybrid affiliate, waived Green, 29, from their training camp this month.

Green played 29 games for the Los Angeles Lakers in 2005-06. He averaged 0.9 points a game for the Lakers.

Green, who has also played overseas in Germany, Italy, Belgium, Puerto Rico, China and Bulgaria, is scheduled to play for Erie in tonight’s game at 7 against Fort Wayne at Tullio Arena.

The Erie BayHawks (2-3) split a two-game series at Iowa against the defending D-League champion Energy (3-3) last weekend.

Iowa won the first game, 112-108, Saturday night as the Energy players who were on the 2010-11 championship team received their championship rings.

The BayHawks won the rematch, 97-87, Sunday. Would provide highlights of this game, but once again, I got the same reply: The uploader has not made this video available in your country.

Where is this one located? China?

Tasheed Carr headed overseas.

After being waived by the Erie BayHawks two weeks ago, Tasheed Carr will play overseas in Germany for Saar-Pfalz Braves, eurobasket.com reported Tuesday. The Braves have nine games left.

The 6-foot, 3-inch, 205-pound guard out of St. Joseph’s started in Erie’s first five games of the season, but saw his playing time drop considerably after that. In 25 games (6 starts), Carr averaged five points and two rebounds.

Carr, 25, who has played in China and Israel, started his college career at Iowa State. The Philadelphia native ended his college career in 2009 with St. Joe’s.

Looking back at it now, Carr was let go in part to make room for Erie to reacquire Garrett Temple, who rejoined the day after Carr was waived after his second 10-day contract with the Milwaukee Bucks expired.

The BayHawks released Carr when they added big man Alton Ford. Erie coach Jay Larranaga said they needed size, but having Temple back made it easier for him to cut Carr.

Thought Carr was a solid offensive player, but it just seemed there was a division between him and Larranaga.

Carr said he didn’t understand why he wasn’t getting playing time and Larranaga never really gave a clear cut reason as to why Carr wasn’t playing.

First-round pick Ivan Johnson gives the Erie BayHawks an inside scoring presence.

The Erie BayHawks enter their third training camp with a new coach in Jay Larranaga, who approached the 2010 D-League Draft with three main objectives:

1. Get bigs.

2. Get guards who can shoot and exude toughness

3. Get guys who aren’t coming straight out of college.

After Monday’s draft, Larranaga feels as if he accomplished those goals in the eight-round draft. That remains to be seen, but for now, let’s take a look at who he picked.

1. Ivan Johnson (6-8, 230, PF, Ca. St.-San Bernadino). He played 45 games in the D-League and averaged 13.9 points and 6.7 rebounds in 2007-08. Big guy. Inside presence, but while playing overseas in Korea this past season, he got kicked out of a pro league for swearing and delivering an obscene gesture to a referee. Now apparently it was the final game of a championship series his team lost, but you can look at this two ways. One, that’s poor sportsmanship, but two, his team was in the championship series and I’m sure he had something to do with that, too. What Erie is getting is a guy who at age 26 is likely making his last push to get in the NBA. So he should be driven.

Mike Gansey averaged 18.4 poinst and 8.2 boards in 27 games with Erie this season.

4:45 a.m. Wednesday.

That’s what time Erie BayHawks guard Mike Gansey’s first of two plane fights exits the runway en route to China as he will play with fellow D-League players and former NBA stars Robert Horry and Chris Mullin, a member of the 1992 Dream Team that won gold in the 1992 Summer Olympics, in two charity basketball games.

Before he headed out,  Gansey did a lengthy phone interview with me about China, the BayHawks and if his hometown team, the Cleveland Cavaliers, were going to win an NBA title this season.

From nearby Olmsted Falls, Ohio, Gansey, as expected, picked the Cavaliers to win it all. Here’s what else he had to say Tuesday afternoon.

Here's Mike Sweetney in this season's training camp with the Boston Celtics.

I saw this guy when he was at Georgetown years ago when I was a beat writer for The Dominion Post in Morgantown, W.Va.

Big wide body. Space eater. Score a ton (seventh on Georgetown’s all-time career scoring list at 1,750 points).

Michael Sweetney was an effective college player, but after being the ninth overall pick in the 2003 NBA Draft by the New York Knicks, his pro career fizzled. Sweetney only averaged 6.5 points and 4.5 boards in 233 games and with two teams in the Knicks and the Chicago Bulls.

Now he’s going to attempt to rekindle his career in the D-League.

Hmmmm.

The BayHawks are filling the roster void left by rookie point guard Cedric Jackson, who signed a 10-day contract with the San Antonio Spurs earlier this week.

Since All-Star point guard Tony Parker will be out six weeks with a broken right  hand for the Spurs, San Antonio will likely keep Jackson for at least two 10-day contracts and might keep him for the remainder of the season.

The Tulsa 66ers made it official.

High school players are now jumping to the D-League as Latavious Williams became the first player to not only go from high school to the D-League, but the 66ers took him with the 16th and final pick in the first round.

He’ll look to enter the NBA Draft next season as he can’t until his graduating class was out of school a year.

Just for the record, Tulsa doesn’t play the BayHawks in Erie this season. Both games are in Tulsa Jan. 17 and Jan. 19.

Go figure, but I’m intersted to see how the 6-foot, 8-inch youngster does. He’s was supposed to go Memphis, but didn’t qualify academically. Then he was supposed to go overseas in China and didn’t.

So let’s see how this route works for him.
