Hawks blog (Atlanta Journal Constitution) – BayHawks point guard Donald Sloan was described as struggling to stop Charlotte’s D.J. Augustin in Monday night’s preseason game, but settled down later in the game.

Peachtree hoops – Former BayHawks PF Ivan Johnson had the best game of the Atlanta newcomers in Monday’s preseason game at Charlotte according to Kris Willis.

Cleveland Plain-Dealer – BayHawks  SF Mychel Thompson hopes to play for the Cavaliers in tonight’s preseason game against the Detroit Pistons at Quicken Loans Arena.

Donald Sloan

Erie BayHawks point guard Donald Sloan had three points on 1-of-6 shooting for the Atlanta Hawks in their 79-77 loss at Charlotte tonight.

Sloan, who was invited to Atlanta’s training camp, had three assists and two rebounds in 16 minutes, 53 seconds.

Former BayHawk power forward Ivan Johnson is also in Atlanta’s training camp. He had four points on 2-of-6 shooting and seven rebounds in 17 minutes, 18 seconds.

If Johnson is waived by the Hawks and returns to the D-League, he’ll join the BayHawks.

BayHawks center Chris Daniels is playing in tonight’s preseason game for the Los Angeles Lakers against the Los Angeles Clippers.

Erie has four players in NBA training camps in Sloan, Daniels, combo guard Cory Higgins (Denver) and forward Mychel Thompson (Cleveland).

The NBA season starts Christmas Day.

Higgins was one of five BayHawks who was invited to NBA training camps with the other four being Donald Sloan (Atlanta Hawks), Chris Daniels (Los Angeles Lakers), Mychel Thompson (Cleveland Cavaliers) and Kyle Goldcamp (Cleveland).

Thompson played in Cleveland’s preseason win at Detroit on Friday night. He scored three points on 1-of-7 shooting. Goldcamp didn’t play, but his parents made the trek from Pittsburgh to see him play.

Goldcamp is in his third season with the BayHawks after starring at Gannon.

Sloan saw action in a public scrimmage and had five points and three assists. Played solid.

Kyle Spain is not one of the five Erie BayHawks players averaging double figures in points.

But since four of those guys – point guard Donald Sloan, who leads the team in scoring at 24.8 points a game, small forward Mychel Thompson, 7-footer Chris Daniels and combo guard Cory Higgins – are in NBA training camps, Spain’ s numbers  may rise dramatically starting Friday night against expansion Canton (2-2).

“Eighty percent of our scoring has gone,” said Spain, who is averaging 9.2 points a game. “So that’s opened up some more minutes for myself. Obviously that’s an opportunity. An opportunity I need to capitalize on.”

Sloan, Daniels, Higgins and Thompson will miss Saturday’s game against Fort Wayne (2-2) as well so Spain will get at least get two chances to show he can put up big numbers.

Spain is also working on his ball handling as evident of a drill he was doing at today’s practice in which he dribbled a ball in each hand across the court and put both basketballs between his legs at the same time without having them touch.

“I got a little drill from Donald Sloan,” Spain said. “Asked him for a few dribbling tips so I can tighten up my handle.”

B.J. Jenkins didn’t waste any time.

He had his first practice with the Erie BayHawks in a shootaround on Thursday morning after they plucked him from the D-League player pool Wednesday.

After the shootaround, the 6-foot point guard out of Murray State had two separate shooting workouts.

He felt ready to play.

“That’s the plan,” Jenkins said Thursday morning. “I’m going to be dressed and ready. About to go home and study the plays right now. Think I got it for the most part. I’m excited. One minute, 40 minutes, I don’t care. I like to play basketball.”

Later that night, he did play and had six points and four assists in Erie’s 105-87 win against the Maine Red Claws at Tullio Arena. Jenkins was 3-of-4 from the field and only committed one turnover in 13 minutes, 46 seconds of play.

He executed the pick-and-roll, got to the rim for a wide open lay up and knocked down the jumper.

“Coach (Jay Larranaga) told me D (Donald Sloan) had been playing the whole game the past two games,” Jenkins said. “I told myself to be ready if I get a chance. If not, just cheer my teammates on.”

The Erie BayHawks closed out Saturday’s three-team exhibition with a convincing 57-42 win against expansion Canton at Penn State Behrend.

Center Chris Daniels had 19 points while forward Tirrell Baines added 16 as the BayHawks shot 62.2 percent from the field.

Erie won its earlier game, 43-39, against Fort Wayne, which beat Canton in the opening game, 49-41. The three games were only two quarters long. Forward D.J. Kennedy (knee) and point guard Al Nolen (foot) didn’t play for Erie.

Look for the Bayhawks to make some cuts in the next day or so. The BayHawks have until 5 p.m. on Nov. 23 to reach the 10-man roster limit. Before looking at the BayHawks, here’s a quick observation of Fort Wayne and Canton.

Fort Wayne is experienced. Has key returnees in Ron Howard and Walker Russell. Got some solid pick ups in former Michigan State forward Antonio Smith and Marvin Phillips, who was a key contributor for the Iowa Energy.

However, the biggest force the Mad Ants have – Chris Hunter – was in street clothes. The big fella was nearly unstoppable in the D-League. With him, Fort Wayne could be be scary.

Canton – The Charge didn’t finish their second scrimmage with Erie well. Got pretty good talent, but they’re young and didn’t play like a cohesive unit down the stretch against Erie.

Now to the BayHawks.

Donald Sloan hit the game winner in the scrimmage.

Just got back from Geneva, Ohio where the Erie BayHawks beat the expansion Canton Charge in an exhibition game at the SPIRE Institute.

First off, the SPIRE Institute is a magnificent facility. Took a tour with the BayHawks there before the scrimmage. Very nice facility.

Now let’s talk hoops.

Erie won, 105-103, but Erie coach Jay Larranaga said, “We got a lot of work to do” afterward.

It’ll be interesting if the BayHawks show improvement in their defense in terms of defending dribble penetration in Saturday’s three-team scrimmage with the Charge and Fort Wayne at Penn State Behrend’s Junker Center.

As far as Wednesday goes, the game was close throughout but three guys came to the front when the game was on the line for the BayHawks.

1. Donald Sloan – Hit the game-winner with 19 seconds left after breaking the defense down with the dribble. This guy can get in the lane, has a nice runner and is automatic from the line.

Several players vying to make the final 10-man roster of the Erie BayHawks made a lasting impression the team’s general manager of basketball operations – Allan Houston.

The assistant general manager of the New York Knicks came to Erie on Sunday for training camp and left Monday afternoon. Here’s a list of the players Houston named when asked who stood out to him while he was at training camp.

Donald Sloan (23 years old, 6-3, 205, Texas A&M) – “I saw it in the Pan-Am trials. Didn’t get to see much of him last year (playing for the Reno Bighorns), but he’s a real point guard. The more and more I talk to other personnel and people throughout the league, a lot of guys come into this league and they have to be combos. A lot of guys who are twos trying to be ones because of their size, but he’s a real point guard. I like his demeanor. Athletic, explosive and he sees the floor well.”

Chris Daniels (27 years old, 7-0, 265, Texas A&M Corpus Christi) – “I like Chris’ skill level.”

Cory Higgins (22 years old, 6-5, 180, Colorado) – “Cory is very efficient. Like we thought, he handles the ball well. Good mid-range shooter. Good defender. He’s probably going to have to get a little bit stronger, but that’s natural for when you come out of college.”

Here’s a look at who the Erie BayHawks chose in Thursday night’s 2011 D-League Draft. Training camp begins Nov. 10 in Erie.

1st round: (7th overall) SG Cory Higgins (6-5, 190, Colorado). Avg. 16.1 points his senior season at Colorado in 2010-11. He’s the son of former NBA player and the president of basketball operations for the Charlotte Bobcats, Rod Higgins.
