Iowa Energy point guard Curtis Stinson applauded what Ivan Johnson has done for Erie this season.

After the Iowa Energy battered the Erie BayHawks, 124-101, Friday night at Tullio Arena, two D-League All-Stars meet at half court – Curtis Stinson and Ivan Johnson.

Stinson, the floor general for the league’s top team in the Energy (35-12), whispered words of encouragement in the ear of  Erie’s inside force, Johnson, who didn’t play in Thursday’s game against Fort Wayne for disciplinary reasons in large part to him picking up 23 technical fouls this season.

Stinson said he told Johnson to “let his game do the talking.” Johnson had 33 points in Friday’s loss for Erie (29-18).

“He’s an emotional guy. He’s a great player. You see it. Night in and night out, he’s killing it. He’s doing his thing. You have to respect him. I just told him to keep holding his head up. Let his game do the talking. That’s something I learned, too. I’m an emotional player, but it’s something I learned. Let the game do the talking. I got a lot of respect for him. He knows that. He’s an All-Star. Scoring 30 every night. That’s not easy.”

Johnson appreciated Stinson’s comments.

“It’s something that every player wants,”  Johnson said. “I appreciate him looking at me like that. I look at him the same way. It’s like, you know you got game when somebody else is saying it.”

Averaging 27.1 points and 10.5 boards, Mike Harris was a man on the inside for Rio Grande Valley this season.

I’m sitting here looking at the All-NBA D-League teams and that first-team squad is nice, but then I checked out the honorable mention list.

Hmmmm.

I could pick five guys from that list and seriously challenge the first team.

“A lot of fans are always on Curtis. Curtis is a very fiery player. Plays with a lot of intensity. He’s just like me. I hate losing, but Curtis will talk more than me. I won’t talk. I just go out there and play, but Curtis, he’ll speak his mind.” – Earl Barron speaking about his outspoken Iowa teammate, point guard Curtis Stinson.

Curtis Stinson (with headband) doesn't mind talking with the fans when in their home arena.

“You’re about to lose.”

Iowa All-Star point guard Curtis Stinson had to say it Friday night.

After all, a small, but vocal group of Erie fans in the front row behind the Iowa bench had been riding him all night at Tullio Arena.

Their BayHawks had come back from a 16-point, first-half deficit to take an eight-point, fourth-quarter lead.

“You really can’t say nothing,” Stinson said. “You can’t get personal. Then you get mad. You just have fun with it because they’re there enjoying it. It’s all basketball, but when you’re losing, they’re coming at you. They chanting my name, ‘Cur-tis! Cur-tis!’”

Then Iowa came back to take a 110-108 lead 64 seconds left on Mark Tyndale’s putback bucket.

With a big smile, Stinson began walking back to the Iowa bench. As he got closer, he took a look at the Erie fans who had been on his case and said it.

“You about to lose.”

Stinson was right. Iowa 116, Erie 111.

Veteran point guard Curtis Stinson had 11 points, nine assists, six turnovers and five rebounds in Iowa's 85-82 home victory against the Erie BayHawks on Tuesday night. The Energy are 8-0 against the BayHawks this season.

The game was played at Erie’s pace. The score is indicative of it.

Erie limited Iowa to 38 percent shooting.

Still, the Energy found a way to edge the BayHawks, 85-82, Tuesday night at home. Othyus Jeffers had a big game – 21 points and 13 rebounds – for Iowa, but Erie shot just 12-of-30 from the free throw. When you’re playing a team like Iowa (26-6), every point matters and you can’t leave any free points on the table.

Can guard Curtis Stinson and the Iowa Energy hold off Dakota, Erie and Sioux Falls to win the Central Division? How they finish this stretch of four games in five days will greatly determine their fate.

The Erie BayHawks are still ninth in the D-League playoff chase after Wednesday’s games. Eight teams make the playoffs.

Bakersfield (25-22) and Albuquerque (23-21) still are holding on to the final two playoff spots. The Jam didn’t play Wednesday and neither did the Thunderbirds or the BayHawks (24-22).

However, Iowa (26-19) lost for the third time in its last four games Wednesday when the Los Angeles D-Fenders beat them in overtime, 130-124.

So Iowa is now just 2-1/2 games ahead of Erie in the Central Division.
