I sat down with NBA Development League President Dan Reed for an interview before the Erie BayHawks played the Iowa Energy on Friday night at Erie Insurance Arena.

In Part 2, I asked Reed about the BayHawks, who have reached the playoffs in three of their first four D-League seasons. Erie is 3-4 so far this season.

I sat down with NBA Development League President Dan Reed for an interview before the Erie BayHawks played the Iowa Energy on Friday night at Erie Insurance Arena.

In Part 1, I asked Reed about how the D-League has changed since he joined in 2007. We also talked about the D-League’s groundbreaking hires and future NBA commissioner Adam Silver’s feelings about the league.

Rule changes.

The D-League has never been shy to tinker with the rules to make its games more interesting.

This season is no different.

The D-League will allow goaltending and shorten its overtime periods from five minutes to three minutes.

Hmmm.

So in this second segment with league president Dan Reed, he and I talked about the some of changes that include the allocation rule and if the salaries have increased for D-League players.

As the NBA D-League enters the 2010-11 season, league president Dan Reed has been a very busy man.

Today (Friday), Reed was in Erie for an event involving LECOM and the Erie BayHawks later tonight. The BayHawks open training camp Saturday morning.

Before attending that event, I did an 1-on-1 interview with Reed about the landmark deal the BayHawks struck with LECOM and the state of the D-League. Click below to hear the interview.

The Erie BayHawks made history this week.

They became the second D-League team to have the logo of a sponsor on its jerseys. The WNBA has had teams do so before Erie and Rio Grande Valley did so heading into this upcoming season.

LECOM has been the major sponsor of the BayHawks since they came to Erie before the 2008-09 season. LECOM provides the team quite a bit like a state-of-the-art training facility.

Now I’m from the old school of not having that kind of stuff on jerseys or uniforms. Remember in Rocky when Rocky Balboa sported the rob from the meat packing plant?

Former Mercyhurst assistant Bob MacKinnon coached the 14ers to a D-League title this season.

D-League president Dan Reed announced today that the 2009  D-League champion Colorado 14ers will relocate to Frisco, Texas and will begin play in the 2010-11 season.

The team will not play next season, though.

So the defending champs won’t be able to defend their title in 2009-10 season.

Hmmm.

The move isn’t a surprise considering Colorado wasn’t drawing flies in terms of fan support. The 14ers were last in the league in home attendance as they averaged 1,050 fans during the regular season.

Sad, but true.

Also when you have Dallas Mavericks president of basketball operations, Donnie Nelson, becoming the principal owner and operator of the D-League team, that’s guaranteed money the league can’t pass up.
