Point guard Cedric Jackson is looking to once again make his way to the NBA through the Erie BayHawks.

The following eight players have been invited to the Erie BayHawks’ training camp that begins Saturday, Nov. 6 at the LECOM Medical Fitness & Wellness Center in Erie.

The BayHawks can have up to 17 players in training camp. Erie opens the 2010-11 season Nov. 19 against Springfield at Tullio Arena.

▀  PG Cedric Jackson – Averaged 16.4 points and 7.4 assists in 34 games for the BayHawks as a rookie last season, The 6-foot, 3-inch, Jackson, 24, received NBA call ups from the Cleveland Cavaliers, San Antonio Spurs and Washington Wizards.

▀   PG Maureece Rice – Avg. 18.7 points to help Erie make the D-League playoffs in its expansion season in 2008-09. Erie tried to get the 6-1 combo guard last season, but Rice, 26, couldn’t get out of his contract with a team in the Ukraine. The Philadelphia native was an exciting player for Erie and was really the difference in the BayHawks making the playoffs.

Rob Kurz (shooting) and Alade Aminu were traded for each other on draft day. Both played in the All-Star game.

Erie made its third trade this season in shipping D-League All-Star rookie power forward Alade Aminu to Bakersfield for shooting guard Blake Ahearn, a 2009 league All-Star.

Here’s a look at how players in the two previous trades have fared this season.

This one got ugly.

The Erie BayHawks shot just 36 percent from the field in their 102-78 loss to the Iowa Energy (25-6) on Saturday night. Erie (12-19) shot 2-of-12 from 3-point range with Frank Tolbert making both of them.

Considering he’s a 23.1 percent shooter from behind the arc, the BayHawks could have easily gone 0-for-12. Jackie Manuel came back from the flu, but was ineffective as he scored seven points on 3-of-12 shooting.

What’s even more puzzling is Erie’s All-Star forward Alade Aminu didn’t score, going 0-for-5 from the field. Mike Gansey also struggled as he shot 4-for-12 to finish with eight points. Gansey was averaging nearly 20 in his games with Erie.

The BayHawks are now 0-7 against the Energy, but will have another chance to beat them Tuesday at Iowa. Odds aren’t in their favor to say the least.

The Springfield Armor have had enough of Mike Gansey.

Last Wednesday, Gansey made two free throws with 5.2 seconds left to beat the Armor in Erie, 95-94. He finished with a game-high 25 points after missing five games with a bruised calf.

Today, he hit the game-winning basket with eight seconds left as the BayHawks (12-16) won, 93-91, at Springfield (5-19). Once again, Gansey was the high-point man with 27 points. He played all 48 minutes for the second straight game in a back-to-back situation.

Here's Snow (in the yellow shirt) at one of Erie's open tryouts in Philadelphia before the 2008-09 season.

The Erie BayHawks picked up a familiar face to help fill their void at point guard for tonight’s 7:30 p.m. game at Maine: Tychicus “Tic” Snow.

Most people in Erie don’t know him, but Snow has tried out for the BayHawks all six times they’ve had open tryouts since becoming an D-League franchise.

Erie coach John Treloar got him out of the D-League player pool. The Manassas, Va., native was one of the 200 prospects available in this season’s draft, but went undrafted.

He averaged 6.5 points and 2.3 assists in his last seasonat at Mississippi Valley State in 2006-07, but I remember him when he participated in the open tryouts in Erie at Family First last November. Snow is listed at 5-foot-7, 165 pounds but he’s very muscular.

“He’s like Spud Webb,” Virginia Fastbreak coach Chris Brown said. “He’s very, very physical.”

A high riser, Tolbert said he loves to get out on the break and throw one down for two.

Former Auburn University standout Frank Tolbert sat court side at Tullio Arena and watched his future team, the Erie BayHawks, lose to the Fort Wayne Mad Ants, 89-87, Saturday night.

Tolbert told me at halftime of the game that he likes Erie’s defensive toughness and heart.

For those who haven’t seen Tolbert play, he’s an energy guy, very athletic and can change the game defensively. At 6-foot-4 and 210 pounds, Tolbert is pretty well put together physically.

He averaged 13.4 points as a senior at Auburn in 2007-08, but that team finished 14-16 on the year. He shot just 42.9 percent from the field, but he grabbed 5.2 boards a game and I recall him having some high-light reel blocks. Tolbert had a team-high 14 swats.

He’s played overseas since his Auburn days so this will be his first stint in the D-League.

Tolbert hopes to suit up for Erie later this week. He’ll be able to join the team once his release papers from the team he played for in Lithuania comes through. The BayHawks will have to release a guy from their roster and based on the fact recently acquired guard Booker Woodfox of Creighton wasn’t dressed Saturday, he looks like the odd guy out.
