Erie's first-year coach, Jay Larranaga, has the BayHawks in playoff contention.

So far, so good for the Erie BayHawks.

With a new head coach, the Erie BayHawks are 17-9 heading into Friday’s game at Maine against the Red Claws (11-16).

Last season, Erie only won 21 games.

This season’s record is a bit skewed because the BayHawks are playing in the East Conference, which has only two teams with winning records, but they win at conference leader Iowa (19-7) on Christmas Day, 114-110 after losing to the Energy on a last-second shot on the road.

Jay Larranaga had never been a head coach in the states and his only head coaching experience was with the Irish National Team, but so far, he’s shown why Erie hired him to replace John Treloar, who left to become the Director of Player Personnel for the Phoenix Suns.

▀  Erie —  PF Ivan Johnson (Team’s leading scorer at 17.9 points a game.  In two games in the NBA D-League Showcase, Johnson followed up a nine-point effort in a win against Idaho to score 25 in a loss to Rio Grande Valley. … SG Garrett Temple (Scored just five points on 2-of-11 shooting against his former team in Erie’s 124-106 loss to defending D-League champion Rio Grande Valley. The Vipers traded Temple to Erie for rookie PF Jeff Adrien late last month. PF Kyle Goldcamp (The former Gannon standout matched his season high for points in a game with 14 against the Vipers. He’s scored 14 points three times this season.

That’s what the Erie BayHawks finished in the NBA D-League Showcase, which concluded today in South Padre Island, TX.

The BayHawks (14-7) beat Idaho, 79-74, on Tuesday, but had defending D-League champion Rio Grande Valley ended their season-best five-game winning streak with a 124-106 loss on Wednesday. The 124 points is the most Erie has allowed this season.

▀  Erie — SF Nate Linhart (After shooting 1-of-7 from the field in Erie’s 116-97 win against Maine on Sunday, Linhart responded with a 12-point effort on 4-of-7 shooting off the bench in Erie’s 79-74 victory against Idaho in the D-Legue Showcase on Tuesday. PF Ivan Johnson Tied his season low with nine points in Tuesday’s win against Idaho. He also grabbed a season-high 13 rebounds. Came into that game the team’s leading scorer at 17.9 points a game. … SG Garrett Temple (Erie is 3-0 with Temple in the lineup since acquiring him in a trade Dec. 30 with Rio Grande Valley for rookie power forward Jeff Adrien. Temple is averaging 14.3 points in those three games with Erie.

Johnson has scored 25 points in each of Erie’s last two games. … C Solomon Alabi (A rookie with the Toronto Raptors, Alabi had a career-high 20 points and 11 rebounds in Erie’s 116-97 win against the Maine Red Claws on Sunday afternoon at Tullio Arena. … PG Blake Ahearn (In his four games with Erie since being reacquired by the BayHawks after being released from a team in Italy, Ahearn is averaging 8.8 points and 7.8 assists. He had 10 points on 3-of-12 shooting and 12 assists in Sunday’s win against Maine.
