I sat down with NBA Development League President Dan Reed for an interview before the Erie BayHawks played the Iowa Energy on Friday night at Erie Insurance Arena.

In Part 2, I asked Reed about the BayHawks, who have reached the playoffs in three of their first four D-League seasons. Erie is 3-4 so far this season.

Ahearn was key in Erie reaching the 2011 D-League playoffs/ETN file photo.

Blake Ahearn didn’t bite on the invitation.

The Reno Bighorns combo guard was watching his former team play a game against the defending D-League champs, the Iowa Energy, that was postponed due the floor being deemed as unplayable.

Ahearn had to leave Tullio Arena with his fellow Bighorns to rest up for their game against the BayHawks tonight when Erie lead local investor Owen McCormick offered to take him out to dinner.

“I got to get some rest so I can put up 30 on you,” Ahearn said smiling.

McCormick laughed.

“Got to show you how much I love,” Ahearn said while hugging him.

In his two seasons with Erie, Ahearn became a fan favorite for nailing threes, being automatic from the line and playing carefree. The day after the 2011 D-League Draft, the BayHawks traded him to Reno in a four-player deal that resulted in Erie getting Donald Sloan.

“I was shocked,” he said. “It was literally the last phone call I thought I would get, but it is what it is. Everybody knows that professional sports, stuff is a business. I mean, Peyton Manning. Look at that. That’s a perfect example. One of the best quarterbacks of all time. That’s just the nature of our business. It came as a shock and to me, the hardest part was leaving the relationships that you have. That’s the toughest part, but you make new ones in new places you go.”

Tonight at 7, Sloan and Ahearn, whom were teammates for Team USA in the  2011 Pan American Games, will square off at Tullio Arena.

“I’m ready for that game,” said Sloan on Thursday night.

Ahearn, who leads the D-League in scoring at 24.4 points a game, can’t wait either.

Allan Houston will run the basketball end of the Erie BayHawks./Submitted photo by the New York Knicks.

When the Erie BayHawks established a hybrid affiliation partnership with the New York Knicks, they got more than just one of the most recognizable NBA franchises taking over their basketball operations.

They got one of the best shooters to ever play the game – Allan Houston.

An assistant general manager with the Knicks, Houston, 40, became the general manager of basketball operations for the BayHawks. A 12-year NBA shooting guard, Houston will make his first visit to Erie on Monday.

Earlier this week, BayHawks beat writer Duane Rankin of the Erie Times-News caught up with Houston on the phone to talk about the BayHawks, his role with the team and the D-League.

You ever been to Erie before? No. (Laughs) No. I’ve heard so many good things and I actually enjoyed spending time with (BayHawks majority owner Steve Demetriou and lead local investor Owen McCormick) and a couple of the owners and meeting the staff in Cleveland. Everybody was excited about our partnership and I’m looking forward to really seeing the foundation of the team, the franchise and Erie. We just really got a good feeling about the people that are running the team.”

When you're standing next to NBA commissioner David Stern (center), you're going to smile no matter what.

The Erie BayHawks made history this week.

They became the second D-League team to have the logo of a sponsor on its jerseys. The WNBA has had teams do so before Erie and Rio Grande Valley did so heading into this upcoming season.

LECOM has been the major sponsor of the BayHawks since they came to Erie before the 2008-09 season. LECOM provides the team quite a bit like a state-of-the-art training facility.

Now I’m from the old school of not having that kind of stuff on jerseys or uniforms. Remember in Rocky when Rocky Balboa sported the rob from the meat packing plant?

The Erie BayHawks (8-12) may have just found their groove.

They’ve won four of their last five games, scored 100 points in three of their last four games and showed the ability to close out an opponent in Wednesday night’s 109-97 win against Fort Wayne.

However, none of those wins have come against a team that currently has a winning record. Erie beat Reno (6-12), Los Angeles (7-8) and Fort Wayne (8-12) twice.
