The Erie BayHawks have dropped to 3-3 on the season after losing back-to-back games at New Mexico (4-1) against the Thunderbirds, who have won four straight games. Erie resumes play Tuesday at Utah (4-3).

Erie picked up a technical foul in each of its two losses to New Mexico to up its total to nine on the season.

Power forward Ivan Johnson was called for his third technical of the season in Friday’s game and first-year BayHawks coach Jay Larranaga got called for his first technical foul of the season in Saturday’s game.

Tasheed Carr is certain he's going to make Erie's final 10-man roster.

Tasheed Carr says he’s focused on just getting better every day in training camp.

Making the Erie BayHawks’ final 10-man roster is a given for him.

“I think I’ve worked hard and I think I’ve earned a spot,” Carr said after Tuesdays’ morning practice. “So right now I’m focused on every day getting better and helping out my team anyway possible and get ready for Friday.”

Now Carr was considered a leader while at St. Joe’s, but the BayHawks are using him as a 2-guard instead of a point guard. Since he can do both and shoot the ball, that makes Carr more attractive to keep on the team.

Erie must get its roster down to 10 by 5 p.m. Thursday. The BayHawks open the season Friday against Springfield at Tullio Arena.

Hard to say who the BayHawks will cut, but their new coach, Jay Larranaga, plans to make the final cuts by the end of the night and inform the players Wednesday morning who’s staying and who’s leaving.

Erie currently has 13 players now. Larranaga hasn’t made a cut since early on in training camp so you know he likes the remaining players.

Point guard Cedric Jackson is looking to once again make his way to the NBA through the Erie BayHawks.

The following eight players have been invited to the Erie BayHawks’ training camp that begins Saturday, Nov. 6 at the LECOM Medical Fitness & Wellness Center in Erie.

The BayHawks can have up to 17 players in training camp. Erie opens the 2010-11 season Nov. 19 against Springfield at Tullio Arena.

▀  PG Cedric Jackson – Averaged 16.4 points and 7.4 assists in 34 games for the BayHawks as a rookie last season, The 6-foot, 3-inch, Jackson, 24, received NBA call ups from the Cleveland Cavaliers, San Antonio Spurs and Washington Wizards.

▀   PG Maureece Rice – Avg. 18.7 points to help Erie make the D-League playoffs in its expansion season in 2008-09. Erie tried to get the 6-1 combo guard last season, but Rice, 26, couldn’t get out of his contract with a team in the Ukraine. The Philadelphia native was an exciting player for Erie and was really the difference in the BayHawks making the playoffs.

The Cleveland Cavaliers will their summer league roster began playing in the Las Vegas Summer League beginning Tuesday. Going into his third season with Cleveland, power forward J.J. Hickson is scheduled to play as is forward Danny Green, who just finished his rookie season with the Cavaliers. 

The Cavaliers 2009 first-round pick, forward Christian Eyenga of the Congo, is also listed on the roster. The 6-foot-5 Eyenga didn’t play last season after deciding to remain overseas and play. 

The team also has some familiar names like Rashard McCants, who starred on the 2004 national championship for North Carolina and rookies Jerome Dyson of Connecticut and Manny Harris of Michigan.

Erie BayHawks coach John Treloar is also working as an assistant for the Cavaliers, who are an NBA affiliate of the BayHawks along with the Toronto Raptors.

 Two things to notice about the schedule is the Cavaliers play against the Miami Heat, who LeBron James chose to sign with instead of the Cavaliers earlier this week, and the Milwaukee Bucks, who have Darnell Jackson, a player Cleveland let go this past season. Jackson is scheduled to play for the Bucks this summer.

As a senior at North Carolina, Manuel won a national championship in 2005.

The players and coaches in tonight’s game between the Erie BayHawks and the Austin Toros will follow the NCAA Tournament for more than just the sheer madness of it.

Many of them either played for or coached at schools that are in this year’s field of 65.

Check out how Jackie Manuel, Ivan Harris and  Coach John Treloar of Erie and Marcus Williams, DeMarcus Nelson and Coach Quin Snyder of Austin think their schools will fare.

As a bonus, I also talked to Cleveland Cavaliers rookie Darnell Jackson, who was sent down to play for the BayHawks just for today’s game, about how his Kansas Jayhawks will do in defending the 2008 national title he helped them win.

College: North Carolina (2001-05). The Tar Heels (28-4) are a No. 1 seed in the South Regional and will open tournament play Thursday against No. 16-seeded Radford (21-11) in Greensboro, N.C.

How will his Tar Heels do in this year’s tournament? “I think they definitely have a great chance of winning it all. Definitely making it to the Final Four. I definitely think they have a great chance.”

What about junior point guard Ty Lawson’s injury? The Atlantic Coast Conference player of the year missed the ACC Tournament with a toe injury and is questionable for Thursday’s game.

“I think he’ll be alright. With Ty being from D.C., he’s pretty tough. Any injury he’s having or he’s had, I’m pretty sure he’ll suck it up and play. He knows what’s at stake.”
