Franklin Little League Association is seeking boys baseball and girls softball teams for its fourth annual Bob Porter Memorial Tournament, set for Aug. 5-7 in Franklin.

The tournament succeeds the Wice-Hart Memorial Tournament that concluded a 10-year run in 2007 and produced thousands of dollars in proceeds for the Wice-Hart Foundation.

Robert E. “Po” Porter was a standout athlete at Oil City High School in the late 1940s, a standout softball player locally in the 1950s and 60s, and was a Franklin Little League, District 25 Little League, and PIAA baseball and softball umpire for more than 25 years.

He died unexpectedly in April 2008, and Franklin Little League Association chose to honor him with a midsummer tournament in follow-up to the very successful Wice-Hart memorial event.

The upcoming tournament will include seven divisions for girls softball – 10 and under, 12 and under (intermediate and advanced), 14 and under, 16 and under (intermediate and advanced) and 21 and under; and four divisions for boys baseball – 7 and 8, 9 and 10, 11 and 12, and 13 to 15. Competing teams will be guaranteed three games. Medals will be awarded to the champion and runner-up in all divisions.

The entry fee is $150 per team in the 10 and under divisions, and $250 in all other divisions. Rosters and full payment are due by Wednesday, July 27. Checks can be made payable to Franklin Little League Association and mailed to Natalie Desko, 299 Dennison Run Road, Polk, PA, 16342.

Prospective teams can obtain more information at http://eteamz.active.com/frklnll or from Natalie Desko at nataliedesko@yahool.com or 814-657-5154; or Chris Porter at christianp1@verizon.net, (814) 437-7396 or (814) 758-7754 (cell).

Tournament proceeds will benefit Franklin Little League Association and the Wice-Hart Foundation.
