Thursday crosshairs: The weekend outdoors

The first wintry weather of the season is threatening this weekend, but that’s no reason to bundle up and head for the couch. Try one of these activities on for size:

1. Steelheadpalooza. Lake Erie Ultimate Angler’s Steelhead Weekend starts Friday at 6:30 at the shop, 3737 W. 12th St., but the real action is Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. with clinics, speakers, casting help and more.

2. Look up. Stargaze at Shelter No. 4 at Pymatuning State Park. Dress for the weather and bring a chair or blanket to sit on, as well as binoculars if you have them. Telescope owners and amateur astronomers are invited to assist. For information, call (724) 932-3142.

3. Call like mad. Fall turkey hunting opens Saturday in Wildlife Management Unit 2F — the Allegheny National Forest region — and in three other northwestern Pennsylvania WMUs on Nov. 13. Check the regulations and season length for each WMU.
