Pennsylvania fishing license sales continue decline

Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission executive director John Arway presented the agency’s annual report to the House Game and Fisheries Committee Wednesday. Some of the main points:

1. Fishing license sales fell 4 percent, continuing a long and national trend. Nearly 1.2 million licenses were sold in 1990, but just more than 800,000 in 2011. “I don’t believe that we can ask the General Assembly for a fishing license (fee) increase, since we know that this will cause fewer people to fish and boat,” Arway said. The commission hopes to launch multiyear license sales starting in 2013.

2. Dredging and other improvements were made at North East Marina and Walnut Creek Access Area, among other dam, access area and hatcheries maintenance and improvements. But the report indicates an additional $34 million is needed to cover construction costs at 18 dams the commission deems high hazard and unsafe.
